chalkwallChalkboard walls are all the rage now–and why not? It’s pretty, customizable, and best of all, functional. You can jot down daily reminders, grocery lists, chores, or even your favorite recipes… and it’s all just right there.

Another plus? You won’t have to worry about your kids writing on the walls and messing up your perfect paint job–you can just give them some colored chalks, point them in the direction of your new wall, and tell them to “have at it!”

Here’s what you’ll need:

-chalkboard paint
-paint brush/paint roller
-plain white chalk
-newspapers (or anything you can use to keep accidental paint drips from ruining your floors)
-painter’s tape

First, make sure to prep your wall by sanding it down to make the surface as smooth as possible. Next, use painter’s tape along all the edges and place down some newspapers to ensure that you don’t get paint anywhere else!

And when that’s done, you’re ready to paint! Apply two to three coats evenly on the wall (let each coat dry before applying the next one).

After applying the final coat, let it dry for a few days. Once it’s completely dry, smear a thin film of chalk all over the wall, then use your hands to rub and smear the chalk around even more. Then, wipe it all down with a damp cloth.

And you’re done! Happy painting!
